About Rachael the Baker
I grew up in a family that loved to cook, to drink homemade wine, to entertain and have parties. When I was 6 years old, my sister (studying catering) gave me my first cookery lesson – 1970s dinner rolls and miniature Cornish pasties! I carried that enthusiasm for cooking and sharing mealtimes through my medical training – from pizza parties in my student digs in London to BBQs on the psychiatric ward as a junior doctor in the West Country.
In 2015 I was due to take on partnership in General Practice but the long, hours, incessant decision making, and constant worry gradually wore away at my joie de vivre. On a long slow drive home from the Alps (in a very small, slow car) I suddenly realised I needed to take action! I needed more laughter, more creativity, more happiness in my life!!
Two weeks later I handed in my resignation, started running Bread Classes in our home kitchen a few months after that, and won Best Cookery School in the Welsh Food Awards in 2018. My husband renovated the upstairs of the old Black Lion Pub in the centre of town and built me a beautiful new cookery school that opened its doors in August 2020.
2024 brings a whole new adventure as we’ll be starting half day classes that pair traditional breads from around the world with exotically delicious salads and sauces, pickles and quickles, meats and herbivorous alternatives.
About Rachael the Doctor
Since 2010, Rachael has developed a special interest in the diagnosis and management of medically unexplained symptoms – the most common of which is chronic primary pain eg. low back pain, fibromyalgia, dizziness and tinnitus. These are unpleasant, disturbing physical symptoms for which modern medicine has failed to find an underlying physical cause, a clear diagnosis or effective management options.
Rachael now offers safe, effective, evidence-based therapy privately, in the relaxed environment of the cookery school. It sounds weird, but it’s a wonderful change from the GP consultation room and you’ll be given a 1.5 hour initial consultation to get you started. Take a look at the Pain Therapy Centre website for more information.
